phpbb won't work with mysql 4.x and php 4.x

OS: FreeBSD 5.4-RELEASE
Box Role: Mailserver/webserver (ultimately including a phpbb forum)
working: Qmail, apache and squirrelmail.
In progress: phpbb

Problem:

I'm trying to get phpbb installed on the server. So far my progress consists of:

mysql-server 4.1.12 is installed and the database for phpbb has been created.

php 4.4.0 is installed with the following:

mailserver# pkg_info | grep php
php4-4.4.0 PHP Scripting Language (Apache Module and CLI)
php4-bz2-4.4.0 The bz2 shared extension for php
php4-ctype-4.4.0 The ctype shared extension for php
php4-extensions-1.0 A "meta-port" to install PHP extensions
php4-mysql-4.4.0 The mysql shared extension for php
php4-overload-4.4.0 The overload shared extension for php
php4-pcre-4.4.0 The pcre shared extension for php
php4-pear-4.4.0 PEAR framework for PHP
php4-posix-4.4.0 The posix shared extension for php
php4-session-4.4.0 The session shared extension for php
php4-tokenizer-4.4.0 The tokenizer shared extension for php
php4-xml-4.4.0 The xml shared extension for php
php4-zlib-4.4.0 The zlib shared extension for php

FYI - php4-extensions-1.0 has been configured to include mysql integration.

As for phpbb, I've downloaded and unpacked the tar ball. I can browse to the directory and access the install.php file by using a web browser and I can configure my database name, user name etc. The problem is, on completion of configuring the install.php, I click sumbit and receive:

An error has occurred during installation
The PHP configuration on your server doesn't support the database type that you chose

MySQL 4.x is *definately* selected on the install.php page. Basically from here I"m on a loss. All the versions I'm running have all been checked to ensure they meet requirements for everything else.

Interesting point to note, as squirrelmail is php based, php is clearly working to some degree as squirrel mail is working flawlessly. I believe the problem is the integration between mysql and php, but I don't understand how.

I have not done any configuration to get mysql working with php other than installing the php4-extensions meta port.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Gsee

What phpbb considers to be MySQL 4.x doesn't include MySQL 4.1.x. You need to create a special type of user for phpbb to access MySQL 4.1.x.
This page tells you how to do it: http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/old-client.html

Orkie,

Thanks for the reply. The website you posted had the fix and everything is working great now. Thank you.

Now all I have to do is get people to my forum to get some posts up

Thanks again,
