php

Hello all,
I have installed mysql php and apache. Apache recognizes php code and can process it but for some reason I can't connect to mysql. The folowing script apache just displays on the web browser instead of connecting to mysql.....

mysql_connect("localhost:/tmp/mysql.sock", "user","password") or
die ("Could not connect to database"); mysql_select_db("guestbook") or die ("Could not select database");

It seems like php can't recognize mysql_connect.
What does it mean if this happens ? When compiling php I used --with-mysql.
Thanks for all help.
Jakub.

I suggest you post a slimmed down version of an offending PHP script.
