Permission to write to folder

I am trying to input the font and skin files into the shared user folder. I understand I have to be under root/admin to do this, but I do not know how. Is there a way to use Terminal?(to copy and paste a file)

enter root password

cd path_to_files

cp files sharedfolder

To copy folders recursively

cp -r files/folder sharedfolder

or if you have midnight commander

Then copy and paste from there.
