in the book that came with my redhat, they say that CGI must be enabled either in the httpd.conf file or a .htaccess file.the httpd.conf dosnt work so i have no choice but to try .htaccess but i dont know how.what do i have to put in the .htaccess if i use it to give the directory the ExecCGI option?

If memory serves, it's ``Option +ExecCGI''. But for that to work you need to have (in httpd.conf) something like ``AllowOverride mumble-mumble'' in the <Directory /dir> section. (Sorry can't remember exact syntax just now; I can check when I get home tonight.) Say, which book are you referring to?

Different Kind of Question

I am running the default installation of Apache that came with Redhat 9

I am also trying to install bugzilla application.
I can open up localhost on webbrowser to make sure that apache is running fine.

when i put in http://192.168.0.3/index.cgi , it only shows the source code.
I have followed the documentation and is still not working.
editing the httpd.conf file with regards to Options ExecCGI and AddHandler cgi-script .cgi

the default location is /var/www/html

i have untarred the bugzilla directory which contains the .cgi files into /var/www/html/bugzilla

i am new to linux so please help!!!!!

I'm guessing that it doesn't know what to do with the ``.cgi'' extension. Check the line in your httpd.conf file that begins:

DirectoryIndex ...

I haven't tried to run CGI scripts quite the way you are attempting but my guess is that you'd need to add ``index.cgi'' (without the quotes, of course) to the end of your DirectoryIndex entry in the apache config file.

That may not solve all your problems but it might get you past that first test you tried.

Cheers...

Rick
