Perforce edits my files when I give a depot path but not if I specify the local path

p4 edit x.c does not work for me, but when I specify the depot path
p4 edit //dev/main/trunk/x.c it works. While syncing my workspace I got some errors because of a bad client spec, but now it's a pain to use the depot path for every edit.

I tried changing the client root directory hoping that it would do something, but it doesn't work.
