PECL install PDFLIB fails Fedora core 5 x86_64

I am having a problem installing PDFLib-Lite-7.0.1.
I am new to Linux and PHP. My experience in programming thus far has been on Windows environments and IBM mainframes. So am not sure if I just doing something wrong. Here are the steps I have taken trying to install the PDFlib extensions.

1. Downloaded PDFlib-Lite.7.0.1.tar.gz and extracted files.
2. Ran the following commands:
make install
pecl install pdflib (also tried pear install pecl/pdflib)
3. entered in for the path to pdf installation:
4. I received the following error after the build completes:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 33 bytes) in /usr/share/pear/PEAR/Registry.php on line 1012
Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 23 bytes)

I read in other forums about changing the memory_limit in the /ect/php.ini file from 8M to 64M, but this not fix the problem. Thank you for any help you can give me.

this is an old post, but i just had the same issue and this is one of the only google results for it:
there is a bug in pear/pecl, you have to install the package using:
peardev install pecl/<your package name>

Thanks, your tip was really helpful. I had actually given up with pdflite and put it on the back burner. When I got your reply I decided to to give it one more try.

Your tip worked great. I had one other problem after it installed, PHP would not start the extension. Even after I edited the php.ini file (I eventually created a pdflite.ini file in php.d to include the extension). However, it would not work. I finally decided to try disabling SELinux and it worked. I reenabled SELinux and it is still working. Not sure why it was blocked, but it works now. Thanks again for your help.
