Question PDF creation from commandline

Just wondering... from my (limited) knowledge of linux systems, I understand that its possible to create PDFs (postscripts) from any file...

However, how would I create a PDF of a MS Word document from the command line?

Also, is it possible to get information on the PDF file once its outputted? Such as the number of colour pages?

I found this which also has alink at the bottom to doc2pdf, but both either require you to have wine+Office or a dedicated machine to run Windows and do the conversion. They both offer to do the conversion via email though, which isn't bad as long as their email is still up.
