pcmcia freeze on mandrake 9.1

I just installed mandrake linux 9.1 and when it is loding the os, when it gets to the part where it loads pcmcia the computer locks up. I have a HP ze4430 laptop and i have heard of others with the same problem. they fix it by disabling the pcmcia by pressing 'I' to go into setup. When I press 'I' it doesnt do anything but just keep loading the os. Please help me as I am used to windows but have never used linux. I'm lost. Can anyone help.

Hitting that 'I' at the right time can be tricky.

I've had the same pcmcia problem with mandrake (8.0, 8.0, 9.0 and 9.1) on my laptop...every time upon first install.

For me, its because for some reason, it tries to bring up the network BEFORE pcmcia (which is kind of dumb when a LOT of laptops have PCMCIA rather than built in cards and there's no logic reason I can think of why the network can't start AFTER pcmcia in any case)

I sometimes missed the 'I' and had to reboot, one time (in 9.0) I just got fed up and booted with the rescue cd, went in /etc/init.d/rc.#whatever number you boot, 6 or 4 or 3 (I change them all) and I renamed the s*network and s*pcmcia link exchanging their boot order and it all works great after that.

I have the same problem. Could you list out a step-by-step of how to change the order of the boot? And how do I find out which number to boot (as per what tcaptain suggested)?

Oh. Btw, I can get into KDE. But this was after disabling the PCMCIA thingy with 'I' at start up... So perhaps an easy way to do it within that?

Ahhh. I figured it out. I think. I modified the run order using the KDrake manager boot thing. And which boot is run is shown when it's booting! Why is it accessing '5' in my case then? ??? Who knows? Who cares?
