Grumpyskeptic, What you are doing (deleting root-owned files without really knowing what you're doing) is most certainly not recommended. Moreover you used sudo nemo when I had recommended in my post that you use gksudo nemo.

/opt is an integral part of most Linux systems (although I won't get into the technicalities of whether or not it is necessary). Do not delete it.

I still stand by my previous comment about contacting Rob. He got back to you, taking time out on Christmas Day no less, with the best solution to your problem and you didn't even acknowledge him. I hope that this doesn't put him off helping folk out in the future.

It doesn't matter if you have the same problems as before because you won't be trying to run pclinux, you'll just be installing it in order to run the uninstall script it contains. If you don't want to do that, then that's your choice, but it is the best option, and far safer than what you're currently doing.

I have followed his suggestions, but it required another 3 months of experience after reading his reply before I was able to guess all the extra unstated things that required doing. I have posted a thank-you, I was not expecting to be able to do so without being required to register.
