Why we need to set PATH in the shell environment?

PATH is a great way to tell the shell where it should find the excutables. It is like a librarian helping customers where to get the proper books. Without the PATH environment, the shell does not know where the excutables are and will not perform the commands when you tell it to do certain actions.

The PATH var is searched when you issue a cmd to the shell, but do not specify the where the cmd is to be found.
The shell searches the contents of $PATH (ie dir list) until it finds the cmd, or errors out.
You can use the 'which' cmd also eg

which cp

says that the cp cmd is stored in

/bin/cp
