Patching SuSe stock kernel

I have been trying to get ACPI working on my laptop with limited success. As far as I can see the thermal bit is working, but no power management. (My laptop support S0, S3, S4 & S5)

From what I read, ACPI support gets better in later kernels (I'm using the stock SusE 2.4.20 kernel, but hand-rolled with a few of my own driver patches and optimised for my own use).

I also read that this SuSE kernel has ACPI patches in it - yet don't work even though i have compiled the ACPI modules.

My question is this: Can I, and is there any benefit in patching this kernel up to 2.4.22/3?

I ask only, as I don't really wan't to download a new kernel from .org, as I would have to find and apply some of the useful SuSE patches (like frambuffers, various drivers etc).

Tks
