pasting swedish text from openoffice write to kile

I have problem with kile. I want to past a swedish text from openoffice write to kile. I don't care about the layout, all I want is the text so i can format it in kile. But when i paste it i have to change view - encoding to utf8 to be able to save the file, and when i later compile it (with latin1) it gives me errors for all the special swedish characters.. I tried to download a file called utf8.def and put it where latin1.def was, but latex didn't find it..

Any ideas?

I guess the swedish characters are treated like symbols. For example you'll need to with (don't know if this will appear correctly) as {\aa}.
