Password Problem

When setting up my Linux Mint 18.3 Sylvia I omitted putting in a password thinking I did not need one. However when I want to enter a command in Terminal it asks me for my password which I never set up. Now I a cant enter the wifi driver for my laptop.
Can any one please help me? The setup wants a password for something like "peter@peter-Optiplex-780" being I suppose the name of my computer.
Thanks
P.

you will need to be more specific, as it's not possible to install LinuxMint,
without giving some password for the new system.

so, what did you actually, do when the installer did ask for that password ?.

Hello Pierre. Thank you for your help. I think I must have put in a password because my command in Terminal suddenly decided to work.
So I should mark this thread as solved. Not sure how to do that though.
Best regards
P.

Hi Pierre. I see you are in Perth. I lived in Hillaries for a few weeks visiting my daughter back in 2014 I think it was. Nice place but very hot.
Thanks for your help.

Hi Pascal,

To mark the thread solved, see "Thread Tools" at the top of the thread.

In saying that, not all terminal commands need your password, only those that need administrator privileges to do what they need to do.

To check, for example, enter:

Code:
sudo apt-get update
and see if that requests your password and, if so, whether you get it right.
