Partitioning Error with NTFS

Hi all,

I guess you could call me a newbie when it comes to Linux issues. I would like to dual-boot Windows XP and Vector Linux (or some other distribution) and thus am trying to resize a hard-drive partition (67 GB or thereabouts) that has the NTFS filesystem. However, when I run qparted and attempt to commit the changes, I wait a couple of hours for the program to scan the drive and then get mysterious "Error!" text with no apparent explanation.

How can I accomplish repartitioning without buying Partition Magic?

Try out Ntfsresize.

Thanks for your response! When I tried GParted, I got the error:

Error(5): read_all: Input/output Error

I ran chkdsk /f before this point.

I had the same once, faulty hardware. If you open an xterminal and type dmesg or check the /var/log/messages file then do you'll see uncorrectable and disk seek errors. The kernel can't read your disk because it's dying, forgetting its data. It's too old, you bought it faulty, etc. Backup it urgently (ntfsclone --rescue) then replace it if it's still covered by the guarantee.
