Partitioning and Modem Detection Problem
Hi!
I am a first time Linux user. My system has following configuration- Pentium 4 3.0 with HT Intel 915 GAV Original Motherboard 120 GB SATA HD Seagate 512 MB DDR RAM PCTel HSP56 V.92 Micromodem 12.0300 Samsung CD/DVD Combo Drive I am a Windows user and has following drive configuration- C: 15 GB (Windows XP Installed) D: 5 GB E: 10 GB F: 20 GB (All FAT32) Remaining Space is free (Approx. 65 GB) I wanted to install Fedora Core 4 without interrupting my existing Windows installation. But there are two problems- I wasn't able to create a SWAP partition. I created two partitions as - 10 GB ROOT Partition 100 MB BOOT Partition But still the system is running well with both Windows and Fedora. Secondly, my PCTel HSP56 V.92 Micromodem was not detected by Fedora. If you can please give me solution for my problems I shall really be thankful. Thank you, regards, Vikas Gupta. |
Lack of swap partition shouldn't be too much of a problem, but you can easily create another one. http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handboo...?part=1&chap=4 explains how to create a swap partition, amongst other things, for your system. Don't worry that's aimed at Gentoo, the instructions are generic.
As for your modem, http://www.linmodems.org/ I believe has drivers for that modem, depending on it's chipset, but internal modems are always very hit + miss under Linux. |

You may want to go to http://store.mepis.com and drop the $15 for the CD. Mepis autodetected my winmodem, it might detect yours too. (no garauntees.) |

Just thought I'd mention that this is almost certainly a supported modem, by the following driver:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pcte...-rht-4c.tar.gz There are two caveats I should give you: 1) it's going to be a little complicated, because you have to download, unpack, compile and install this driver - nothing is very "automatic" about it 2) Under FC4 the driver has a known problem with the mouse, which will require an additional bug fix I can provide for you, but you have to edit some files and then recompile. Again, somewhat complicated for a novice user. The good news is you don't have to buy any extra hardware if you're willing to do some work. Regards, Jeff |

Hi all,
I've created a "patch" file for this driver so the fixes for Fedora Core 4 (and other distros) are now a single, simple step. Hopefully these fixes will soon turn up in a new driver version but for now you can just add an extra command when you install the driver and it should work for you. Send me a message on here if you want the patch file. -Jeff |
How i can read fat 32 & ntfs partition in fc4
How ican install modem in FC4 |
Hi Anuvb101,
In order to help you with your modem question, you should provide some more information. In particular, what kind of modem are you using? Also, please provide the output of "/sbin/lspci". For the fat32 and ntfs question, FC4 should give you the ability to read these automatically. Normally they can be found under /windows/C (for example). Good luck, Jeff |
Update: the patches for FC4 have been incorporated into the mainline driver and it's now available for download. Here are the instructions:
http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pcte...9-rht-5.tar.gz Do the following steps: tax xvzf pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-5.tar.gz cd pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-5 su (type your root password) ./setup In about two minutes you should see "modem activated" and your device will be ready for use. |
