Partition Resizing
 

How would I resize an active partition? I accidentally set my swap size to small and I would like to resize it.

I've tried QT parted, but the option to resize is grayed out.

its probably grayed out because the partition is mounted ...
you have to make sure the partition to be resized is unmounted, before attempting somethign like this ...

But I can't unmount it, since it's the active partition that linux is on.

I have bootable partition magic 8 floopies, you think I can use them to bootup to resize the partitions?

You also could boot up with the system rescue cd and run qtparted from it...

The first thing you would have to do is create/borrow space from another partition either directly in front or behind your swap partition before you can resize the swap partition.

CAUTION:

Any time you mess the the partitions the likely hood that things can go wrong is greatly augmented. BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP BACKUP. Oh did I mention backup your work?

Question:

1) how much ram do you have?
2) what is your swap partition size?

I originally had 2:1 ratio. Now I have 1.5:1 ratio. I use very little swap on my system. if you are using swap file extensively you may want to consider upgrading ram. I have 768 mb of ram and use only about 10-80 meg of swap on a heavily loaded system.

I have 256MB RAM and set the SWAP to 256MB RAM by accident.

do you find at times you are swapping a great deal?

If you are you have two choices:

1) increase the amount of ram. Recommended
2) increase the swap. Not recommended
a) anytime you utilize the swap file extensively your system is going backwards
b) reduce the overall load on your pc

if snapshot I viewed is typical of your system I would leave well enough alone.

Nope, I haven't really notice any swapping. Increasing physical memory is not an option, we don't have any spare DIMM chips laying around. I just thought it would be a good idea to increase the SWAP size to 2.5 the size of the physical ram.

I guess I should leave things alone afterall..

you'd be definelty wasting space by doing that ...
you shouldn't have a problem with the amount of swap space you presently have ...

i wanted a dual boot system with win xp and knoppix on same physical drive.
i partitioned my hard drive to install knoppix
but i installed a second physical drive and put knoppix on it
i increased the winxp partition with qtparted but stupid windows still says its the smaller sized partition, the question is how do i return
my winxp partition to its origanal size?
