Participating can be done on all sorts of levels and with all sorts of skills. Participation doesn't by default equal coding. It can be anything from tracking the projects CVS and testing builds (always helpful for developers if they don't have access to all platforms or distributions), documentation (for instance Real Life examples and solutions always help), promotion like writing LQ or web log articles (more exposure means more users, fixes, improvements) or helping out other users. About the only thing you need is some time to spend, the genuine interest to help others and perseverance. Out of the software you use, select one you really like or something that really needs improvement. Get on the user mailing list and help others with questions. Pitch some improvement to the developers. Provide patches. Else Sourceforge does have a forum where projects advertise their need. Contact the developer(s) and see if you fit in. There's no wrong or right approach and a lot of people who get involved stumble a lot before getting things right. Some things you can't learn by reading about it:
just go do something! And thanks for participating.
