pam_start() failed, error 26

I am having issues with booting up ubuntu 7.10 - it hangs after ubuntu logo comes up.

However, I am able to boot it in single user mode, connect to network.

# passwd
passwd: pam_start() failed, error 26

This, I suspect is the root cause of the bootup failure.

Any insight into how this can be fixed?

Thanks,
Ramana

What is the output of:

Code:
ldd /usr/bin/passwd
And:

Code:
ls -l /lib/libpam.*
