Packages and Updates - Getting YUM onto RHEL7.x

Hello All

I am a bit new to RedHat.
I recently installed it onto Virtual Box.

My Basic Questions are as follows

1. Is it possible to upgrade my RHEL7 via the redhat network without paying?

2. If I am unable to upgrade via RHEL NTWK, is there some place where I can ftp a bare bones yum utility. the one I found required several other dependencies.... Those dependencies require other dependencies.

3. If the answers to 1 and 2 is no is my RHEL DOA? which means that I should just focus on using fedora/centos in order to learn RHEL?

4. Any other information you can provide would be appreciated.

**************The Story is as follows****************

after installing RHEL7, the first thing I noticed is that I was not able to connect to the REDHAT ENTERPRISE NETWORK. I think I read some where that you need to purchase a subscription in order to get access. Unfortunately this is not an option as I am in between jobs and a bit short on cash right now.

This has become a problem as I am unable to install packages or perform any upgrades. The Netscape browsers appears to be out of date. So its not feasible to use the internet. I have tried simply downloading the packages onto my other boxes (fedora/centos) and then ftping them to my redhat box.
This is not the best strategy. When I finally ftp the package onto red hat i find that the package is dependent on several other packages being installed. This is a bit of a nightmare.

Please help.

there is no red hat RHEL7 yet

and Netscape has not been around in years

by chance are you trying to use the VERY ANCIENT "RH7" that was released in 2000
if so that will never run on new hardware
it is SO old that red hat no longer supports it
just as they no longer support RH8,RH9, "----name change------" RHEL2,RHEL3

the current is RHEL6.3

if that RHEL7 is a typo and you ARE using the SERVER GRADE RHEL6.3

RHEL is not free
a "you / self support" license is $49 PER YEAR
but the recommended Standard license is $299 PER YEAR
https://www.redhat.com/apps/store/desktop/

or use one of the free rebuilds
CentOS 6.3
or
ScientificLinux 6.3

BUT RHEL/CentOS/SL
are NOT a good choice for a home general purpose computer
It is DESIGNED for the SERVER and for the Business office

that is NOT a good idea , and a VERY BAD one at that

reinstalling might be the best option
mixing and mismatching is NEVER a good idea

Looks Like I was barking up the wrong tree.

Hi John VV

My next question.

For educational excellence...
Should I use RHEL and just find a way to pay for the $49 subscription?

or Should I Just use fedora or Centors for my educational endeavors?

I am leaning towards just paying the $49 bucks to get the patches and updates.
I don't really have the cash, but I want to be on the same page with the techs who are interviewing me.

******************Idle chit chat************************

I am ashamed to say that I believe it was RHL7 and not RHEL7.
It looks like I was barking up the wrong tree. Thank you for catching that.

I am actually not looking to use it for home. I need it for self education.
I was a Jr Solaris Admin. That job has ended and I have decided to learn redhat because that's where the market is.
In most of the job interviews I've had (4 to 5), all the employers are asking for red hat xp.

Being unemployed. I have nothing but time. So I got a library card and I'm planning to read RHCSA/RHCE Red Hat Linux Certification Study Guide...6th Edition. I also have a laptop setup with Virtual Box and an external disk. So far I have been playing with fedora, Centos, and RHL7. Thus far it has been exciting.

It looks like I cant GET RHEL?

Hi John VV

It looks like I don't have a choice?
I went to the site to try and down load it and found this. take a look and let me know what you think.

Server Operating Systems

Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server for 32/64-bit x86
Support Levels | Product Information
2 socket server options

Prices in US dollars
2-sockets with 1 virtual guest
Self-support Subscription (1 year)$349USD

We noticed that your Red Hat Login uses a personal email address. We're sorry, but users must have an enterprise or business email address to obtain product evaluations. Below are your options:

1. Change your email address in your Red Hat account to your Enterprise,Corporate, or Business address. Then, click the eval download link again.

2. Visit the Fedora Project
If you are a non-business user and would like to experience the benefits of Red Hat technology for free, please visit the Fedora Project.

Will I miss anything by using FEDORA for training?

Fedora is on (or awfully close to) the bleeding edge; if you want to learn Red Hat Linux on the cheap, then go with either CentOS or Scientific Linux.

1. Go with Centos; its basically a free rebuild of RHEL (Scientific Linux is another option).
Includes updates but not support.

2. There's no such thing as 'red hat xp'

3. Don't use Fedora for this, its RH's R&D bleeding edge distro

I'm guessing "xp" in this context means "experience" or perhaps even "experience points" :-)
