Hello, I'm currently having difficulty getting Gnutella up & running for KDE. I have downloaded the gz file from Tucows but cannot seem to either unpack it properly or start the installation. Can someone tell me where I'm going wrong? Many thanks
File name is 'gtk-gnutella-0.93.2.tar.bz2' I also tried 'gnapster-1.5.0.tar.gz' but haven't had any success with that either.gtk-gnutella-0.93.2.tar.bz2
I too use to go through a lot of crap just to get a P2P going on my linux box. I use to install and (for me, painfully configure) go through the trouble of setting the programs up. Not anymore. I read in Linux Mag. last month or this months issue about a program called LimeWire. http://www.limewire.com
You need Java installed (and if you have problems with LimeWire, install Java 1.5) and that's about it. You don't even need to be in root to install anything. I constantly get 300 kb/s download speeds and it connects directly to the Gnutella network. I don't work or are any way associated with LimeWire, i just couldn't believe how easy it was to setup compared to the "other" options out there.
**Edit - I should also add, that it doesn't have any spyware or advertising - other than to upgrade to Pro. Here is a direct link :
Funnily enough I did also download Limewire from Tucows, thanks for the link though. I've run the 'chmod' command, which I believe is what is required for a .bin file. However cannot seem to do anything with it. Would appreciate some guidance. Thanks.
Thanks for the lines of code, still hasn't helped though. I keep getting the message file/directory not valid or does not exist. I'm pretty sure it does! If you could be a little more explicit in the method I should use, I'm not a total thicko but lines of code & programming certainly aren't my strong point. Your help is much appreciated.
Alright. coming from Windows I was a huge P2P person myself so I know what you are dealing with. Like others posted you can use LimeWire. Granted LimeWire is a clean and easy to use application, I find that for Gnutella GTK-Gnutella is the best I have used on both the Windows and Linux platform. When you untar the gtk-gnutella tar ball go to the read me file. This is because gtk-gnutella is not a standard install (meaning not just ./configure, make, make install) you have to type carriage to agree to the terms. You are then walked through a screen that is asking for your input concerning preferences. Once that step is done it will ask you if you want to run "make" now. You type in yes. This will then run through for at least a few moments and then it will tell you that you have to run make again in /usr/bin. Just type make. This will go through again. If all goes well you type "make install". and after all that type "whereis gtk-gnutella" and it should tell you that it is in (my settings anyway) /usr/local/bin/gtk-gnutella. Hope that helps.
