Introduction to Linux - A Hands on Guide
This guide was created as an overview of the Linux Operating System, geared toward new users as an exploration tour and getting started guide, with exercises at the end of each chapter.
For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.

Anyone that can tip about a good osdhowto and what osd application i should use. I'm trying to get my volume on the screen when i change it (i use fluxbox, debian sid).
Also where to find good applets that are compatible with fluxbox.
You will probably need to have xosd installed (I believe some applications have their own OSD engines now, but you should get it just to be sure), and from there configure the OSD settings in whatever media player you are using. For example, Audacious handles OSD for volume, song name, etc.
Well i can use osd_cat and write a script that greps volume from amixer. Maybe I'm not looking for an osd application, i would like to display images when i press volume buttons. Are there special that works like osd but display images? And once again a good hotow for writing scripts or configure som demon.
That's exactly what I want to do since a few days (didn't really have the time).
I thought about stealing the volume osd app that comes with the acpi-ibm. I'm jealous of this nice volume bar..
I think that's the laziest solution I've found
I have been searching for some days now, anyone who got any ideas? Gnomes volume osd is ok, but i don't know howto use it in fluxbox, or any osd apps that can handle images.
