I need a script, that when running on a machine, it returns the platform (the name of the hardware implementation, ex: SUNW,Ultra-30...) , the processor type, the name of the operating system running on this machine and its release level (ex: SunOS 5.8)
thank u again

I know this command, therefore this command is not valid for all the operating systems I'm using in my network. That's why I'm looking for a script which can do the same fonctionnality as uname and which can be run on any OS.
ps: i'm using several machines, hp-ux, linux, sun ....

Not sure about a OS-independent script, but
nmap has OS-detection ...

might do the trick

nmap is available for quite a lot of platforms
(linux, solaris,HP-UX, netBSD enz..) just check the downloads-section.

But indeed, it's not a shell-script..
