Oracle 9i RAC Install on Linux AS

Hi All,

I am in the process of trying to understand/evaluate the steps required to install Oracle 9i RAC on Redhat Linux Advanced Server.

Our h/w configuration is 4 HP rx4640 nodes with interconnects and shared SAN storage.

A rough overview of what we plan to do is as follows:

1. install & configure linux redhat as on each node
2. configure public/private network between nodes
3. configure shared storage
4. install & configure OCFS
5. install oracle 9i Cluster Manager
6. install oracle9i RAC
7. install oracle software and create db

There are two key points that i'd like help on though. Firstly, i relise that our h/w config will be 4 nodes with shared storage and a private network, but do we have to install/configure clustering at OS level (i.e. LVS)? Or is oracle Cluster Manager the only clustering required? My understanding is that we do not have to have clustering at OS level but at application level? I can't seem to find a definite answer to this.

Secondly, I am unsure about configuring the shared storage. When i install redhat on each node, each node will be able to see the storageworks SAN, will the install detect this storage? If we have no OS clustering where is the h/w database etc to tell oracle that disk x seen by node 1 is the same as disk x seen by node 2? I'm just unsure about how the shared storage is configured/controlled, what happens if we replaced / add a disk, how does each node know that it's effectively the same disk?

Apologies if my questions are unclear, please let me know if more info is required. All help is greatly appreciated!!

Regards,
GB

GB, don't touch *anything* until you visit this URL: http://www.puschitz.com/OracleOnLinux.shtml

Once you have reviewed the info at that URL, you should be able to make some progress.

On the subject of shared storage, you need some background on the technology which I think you can get by reading the storageworks docs/web sites and visiting the forums at Oracle Technology Network: otn.oracle.com (registration required but it's free).

More questions about Oracle RAC config

I am experiencing the same frustration. I read the excellent article. It does not specify some issues.

Oracle tells us that the NIC for the VIP IF is to be 'configured but not plumbed'. Ok, I am fresh out of teflon tape, what does the ifcfg-eth0 look like in that condition?
