Hi,

After a lot of messing around, I managed to get Oracle 9i Lite installed on my SuSE 9 box. I can happily type sqlplus /nolog and get:

SQL>

However, when I try:

SQL> connect / as sysdba

I get:

connect / as sysdba
ERROR:
ORA-24314: service handle not initialized

Does anyone know why this is? I'm not sure if I've followed the post-installation steps correctly or not, so this is my guess as to the problem. One strange thing is, is that I do not have a $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory, nor a dcba binary.

Hope someone can help me get this set up.

I've had 124 posts on this and no replies, which makes me understand that there are a lot of people with the same question, and just me with an answer! :O)

Yes I did manage to get it to work in the end, after attempting the install a huge number of time. The main problem was setting the kernel parameters. If you use SUSE, they provide a _nice_ rpm to set this all up for you, otherwise I can't help without looking it up.

As for the install errors, these are to be ignored and fixed at a later point in the install. I wrote down every step I took when i installed oracle, but have exams coming up soon so haven't managed to put them online as yet - soon, I hope!
