Oracle 9i Install?
 

Recently I downloaded Oracle 9i for my Mandrake Linux 9.1 setup. Well, after I downloaded it, it took forever to extract? I'm a newbie to Linux and I'm trying to become more familiar with it. I'm not exactly sure how to install programs at this point. I can get some stuff to extract and some stuff not to extract, and I managed to get the Opera web browser installed, but other than that, I'm pretty lost. After I finally got Oracle 9i to extract, I couldn't install it. What is a .csio file mean? Is it the same as a .iso file, but for Linux? Oracle9i extracted into a .csio file. Well, help is needed and if anyone out there is board and holds the answers, let me know! Thanks a lot!

You can use the csio command to get at the files in .csio files. :) Rather like turning .iso into readable disks....

Ah, thank you very much! I have the files downloaded, etc. I didn't even look at the Oracle site. I'm very sorry for such a newbie question. As for the .csio files, thank you again. That makes a lot more sense! What if I extract them in windows and burn them in iso format, will mandrake linux 9.1 read them?

Oracle 9i installation is an extreme challenge for a Linux newbie (are you a religious fundamentalist?). Try installing easier things like Flashplayer and Java2 <http://members.shaw.ca/trollking >.

The oracle database is packaged into three files that end in filename.cpio.gz. Using Gnome Toaster:
1) Put in cdr
2) Click the disk icon (press 'clear disk')
3) press the folder icon
4) Drag and drop one of the oracle disk files from the top section tree onto the bottom window
5) Press the disk icon
6) Press record

Note: When you install 9i database Server on Linux, you need about 512MB RAM and at least a 1GB Swap partition.

if i am not wrong oracle is not free how did u download it?

If you really want to try it out, just go ahead, mind you the downloads are pretty huge.
It took me a full 4 hours to transfer 1.7 gig of installation files

Hi there, I noticed you mentioned using Redhat 9.0 to deploy Oracle9i
I am doing the same thing too.
I have gotten everything to work fine, but .. is it just me? or is Oracle known to be extremely unstable on RH9?
It crashes so often, symbolic links seem to disappear after crashes, & even the menu for the enterprise console sometimes doesn't get rendered properly

i was thinking it was my test server crashing - I had several lockups when oracle is running and X just suddently drops out. i think some of the problems are due to incompatible(?) glibc packages of the downloaded version of RHL 9 (I had to use the purchased cd version of glibc to have oracle install).

try checking the optimization tips fromt he link in my previous post.

(i haven't deployed any oracle server yet ....:D still trying to get a good grip on it.)

Ahahaha actually, i have already seen the puschitz website ^_^
before reading his faq, i couldnt even get past the first install window ahahaha
But now, I have followed everything he has listed down, but its still very unstable on Redhat 9.0
i have reformatted over 19 times in the past 8 days
sometimes, oracle works fine, *i managed to see & control another machine with oracle on my other workstation running win2k) then it crashes, & i get some stuff about tns listener not working
i really dont know how to fix this

i want to try on redhat 7.3, but i think my new machine is too *NEW* ahaha
there's an error during installation, syaing there's a fatal error + asking me to report blah blah blah
i'm running a p4 3.02 Ghz machine
