oracle 9i and RedHat9
 

when i try to install oracle on to rh9 i emmediately get:
[root@linux root]# cd /mnt/cdrom/
[root@linux cdrom]# ls
doc index.htm install response runInstaller stage
[root@linux cdrom]# ./runInstaller &
[root@linux cdrom]# ./runInstaller: line 58: ./runInstaller: cannot execute binary file
This complaint also occurs when the extraced iso is palaced on hd.
this issue seems to occur too quickly in the install process to be an incompatability issue with the kernel or simple dependency. I have downoaded a fresh copy with the same results.
Any help would be great.

I agree. Do a 'file runInstaller'....are you sure this is a 'linux' version of oracle? I know it sounds stupid but just checking. :)

i'm also getting the same error code,
but i'm using Redhat 8.0 and Oracle 9.2.0

i found one problem in your comment,

you are not suppose to execute the file in root user (which is given in the following link)

I encountered the same problem with RH 9.0 and Oracle 9i. I ran 'file runInstaller' and received message 'runInstaller: ELF 64-bit LSB executable, IA-64, version 1 (SYSV), for GNU/Linux 2.4.0, dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped'.
I think what all of this is telling us is at the beginning of this message. The distrubuted version off of Oracle web site is for 64 bit and will not run on anything else. If anybody has a work around, I would appreciate it.

I am having the same problem on Mandrake with Oracle 9.2, has anyone gotten past this "cannot execute binary file" problem?

have u checked the link navamnk gave above? i had the same questions before - and plyed dumb 'coz i am too lazy to read the instructions there.

But checking it out one at a time solved my problems.

I thought navamnk's link was related to trying to install using root user, which I wasn't so didn't check it.

Actually the link covers the entire install process as well as common errors and solutions. It is very useful.

If you are reading this thread you would do well to check navamnk's link.

I used the instructions that were provided in navamnk's link and had a succesfull install. The key seemed to be 'faking' the install process in to thinking it was using an older kernel. Oracle 9i does not support the current version, but the install allowd me to use all features of Oracle correctly.
