oracle 8i on Redhat 9, OK ??
hi,
i installed redhat 7.1 on my dell laptop 2650, and am considering upgrading to RH 9 as i am facing problems with Geforce2 Go video card vs X on 7.1.. none of the workarounds work for me.. u can see my post in Linux-Newbie forum
I already burned RH 9. Before installing i would want to know if Oracle 8i is compatible with RH 9 or not.
All i see on the net, is about Oracle 9i on RH 9 or Oracle 8i on RH 7.x/8, and NO WHERE about Oracle 8i on RH 9.
Can somebody confirm if i need to install RH 8 and NOT RH 9 to have oracle 8i.
My basic constraint is space, and i cannot afford Oracle 9i on my laptop, also 8i is sufficient for my basic oracle skill building.
any help is appreciated.

Well, I am no guru by a long shot, but I have had no luck at all getting Ora8i on RH9. It doesn't like the glibs, you have to use the Blackdown JVM (no choice), all in all not a pleasant experience.

Thanks. may be i could do a custom install of Oracle 9i (on RH 9) installing only few components to limit its size to around 1 GB.
is this idea any good ??
(Full install of Oracle 8i takes 700MB and 9i around 3.5 GB)

Hey, that's what I am about to try. There are lots of howto's on the net about RH9 and Ora 9i. Lot's of gotcha's, too, (you have to give up the new linux threading model), but a number of folk have done it. It is hardware limitations that most people talk about.
Cheers--
