Opera in KDE
 

How can I make Opera play friendly with KDE 3.5.10? I can ignore the different buttons and layout, but I'm surprised something that uses QT doesn't try to fit in with KDE at all.

Opera seems to ignore my system style. When I run '$ opera -systemstyle' from the command line, Opera just crashes.

Opera uses a different file browing dialog.

When I open an HTML file in KDE it opens in Konqueror.

Opera puts an icon in the system tray, an icon that I can't see. It is just a bit blank empty space that provides a menu on right click and makes Opera invisible on left click.

what version Opera!?

Does the latest 10.60 beta/alpha work any better?

It use(d) Qt4, not Qt3. So it does not even know that KDE is running.

Opera is one of those weird browser that never quite fits in.

If you were using KDE4 there are lots of things you could do, but KDE3.5.10 is old. You might consider moving to Testing/Squeeze. Testing is due to be frozen at the end of August and if all goes well hopefully released by the end of the year.

Aside (sorry I can't stop myself): Maybe that is because Opera values being standards-compliant. (I apologize--I have used Opera for almost 10 years. I'm a fanboy.)

Going back to the OP, Opera probably does not understand the switch, which would lead to a crash. If is not an Opera switch, you are asking the Opera executable to do something it doesn't know how to do.

The HTML file opening in Konqueror issue is a KDE file association issue. It has nothing to do with either Opera or Konqueror. KDE will open a file in whatever application you have associated with that file extension.

"Standards-Compliant" has NOTHING to do with the user interface. It just means that it interprets HTML, etc. perfectly according to the standards.

Then please tell me more about how you think Opera never quite fits in. I am most curious.

for the record, 10.60 seems to be unusable with kde3 - file dialogs just contain input box and type selector, no directory browsing etc.

Okay, now I fully understand the "never fits in"--it applies to consistent appearance amongst applications. Thank you for clearing that up.

I don't care about that, but I know many persons do. Differnt strokes and all that.

Regarding 10.60, I have been running a late beta on my Slackware 13.0 box for about a week and it has worked just fine (including mail, IRC, RSS, and newsgroups), except for a text-entry freeze last night. I could not type into the address bar. I opened a text editor and could type in that. A reboot clear it up.

I downloaded the release of 10.60 to my netbook (Dell Mini 9 Ubuntu 8.04) tonight and it has been working fine.

The upgrade installation went smoothly (I wasn't worried about backing up anything because all the important stuff is on my laptop).

Some older skins do not work well with the new 10.60. They have gotten rid of the menu bar and replaced it with a menu icon on the tab bar to make the browser window larger. (You can bring back the menu bar if you wish.)

Some of the older skins do not handle the new menu icon properly. Some do.

To me that was pretty obvious from the start.

Still, I don't care too much if apps look different as long as they all look good.
