Opera's Fonts
 

I like Opera but the fonts look terrible in pages. I checked out the prefrences and not much can be done there.

Do we have to just accept Opera to look like this or can we make it look nice?

I've been trying to figure this out as well. I hate the default fonts in Opera. I've tried to change them in the preferences but they don't stick. Even after I change them, they still stay very small on a normal page. I still use Opera though as it's just way too fast and light to go back to mozilla or netscape, and it's got the "refuse popup windows" feature that I love so much. If you ever find out how, PLEASE let me know--even if you have to email me and I promise to do the same. I've read through the "support" at the Opera website and it's not much help. Hopefully there will be someone here who knows what's up with those fonts.

I use Opera 6.02 and love it after using mozilla for a year, Opera is just the best! Are you guys using a unregistered version because I found out after it was registered some of the options that didn't seem to work just came to life..... Look around on the net and you can find a way to register it :-)


PS what version are you using? Also do you have TT fonts installed?

Mine's not registered (I'm too cheap to buy it). Any pointers as to where to register or are you going to make me google for it? ;)

I have the same problem with Opera and OpenOffice. I think it is something to do with truetype fonts but I can't seem to find any definitive answer on how to solve it. I tried copying all my truetype fonts from my windows partition, but this caused Galeon's fonts to look the same, so I deleted them.

Anyone know the solution?

I found how to make the text larger or smaller. Go to FILE>PREFERENCES>DOCUMENT. Just click on Document, not any of the subdirectories. You can then "Choose" for each of the settings. I hated the default "normal" font so I changed it to Utopia Normal 12 point. The original was Lux something Normal 8 point. This at least fixed that part. I'd still like to have more than a few fonts to choose from though.

Chances are if you didn't install them, Then you don't have them..... they can make all the differance! I have no idea how to do this in Slackware though :)

I found a recommendation on a website (can't find the link anymore :() but it said it would help alleviate random segfaults in Opera 6.11. I did the update, and haven't had a segfault yet, but then again, I might not have given it enough time to have a segfault. :D

Anyway, make sure your Opera isn't open, and edit your /home/Crashed_Again/.opera/opera6.ini file by adding the following:

Enable X Core Fonts=0

to the User Preferences section. I did this, and it didn't cause any problems when I started Opera again. I haven't noticed anything out of the ordinary either. Hopefully this will be the end of random Opera crashes for me and others.

Okay sounds good. I've been experiencing some random segmentation faults as well. I'll let you know if I get anymore after this.

I should rephrase my question. Do the TT fonts come with the Opera 6.11 package or would they have been installed with X or some other package--do I need to get another special Opera TT fonts package or anything?

No they don't come with Opera ...they do come with a package...it's called M$ Windows :-) snag them off a Windows box!

OK, Just make a dir. called fonts and copy the contents of the Windows fonts folder into it. Now I'm not sure in slack ...but RH 7.3 /KDE3.0 go to the control center and then system and font installer and point it to your fonts dir. and click install. Make sure in Opera you have the font boxes unchecked so the web page can use the fonts called for by page rendering.

Look here to start with. That should give you the stuff that you need to be able to get the M$ tt fonts into your system.

Don't forget that if you are dual booting like me (mandrake 9.0 and XP) my XP is formatted as NTFS and makes it a total twat to just copy the font's across.

I have to admit, that I can't remember why but I had to re install my mandrake the other week and haven't got round to re-installing the opera. I was actually waiting for opera 7 for linux to come out before I did.

Anyhow, I followed the instructions in the link above, and got the msttcorefonts into my system and then just went and selected them. I like to use tahoma, but that is one of the fonts that you have to pay attention to the instructions for.

I seem to recall that there is another setting that I had to change so the "on screen" fonts didn't appear too small and virtually unreadable

p.s. If you can't sus it out, let me know, and I'll do the download of 6.11 and play with it till I remember exactly which settings I changed.
