OpenSuSE Shutdown Splash Problem
 

I'm getting really irritated by this. Let's start with the usual system specs:

HP dv6209nr Laptop
1MB Ram
AMD Turion64 2.0GHz
nVidia GeForce GO 6150
OpenSuSE 10.3
Kernel 2.6.22.17-0.1

Some time ago I ran the usual updates, I trusted the updater, which has gotten me into trouble before. Nothing serious happened, except that all of a sudden when I shutdown my laptop, instead of getting the nice SuSE splash screen I get a blank screen for 5 minutes before the computer shuts off.
The splash screen when I turn my machine on works just fine, and I've scoured the logs for hours looking for some clue as to why it doesn't work, to no avail. I've posted on the SuSE forums about this but gotten no response. I've uninstalled and reinstalled both of the packages SuSE uses for boot splashes (bootsplash and splashy I believe), no cigar. If the bootup screen works why doesn't the shutdown work?
Can someone please help??

however, try and stick to one splash type if possible....I prefer you moved to mandriva..heh heh but lets keep it simple?

2) when you update your kernel....you are supposed to update your initial ram disk image...if you are still using the default opensuse kernels.

3) that gives you a hint...altho your post count may mislead me....if that does not fix the problem....consider reading the suse way of compiling kernels and move to a source style...rebuilt kernel...where you control more of the action....it does cost time to learn.

personally I have moved off my mandriva kernel and I use a vanilla from the kernel.org with my own tweaks after patching.

4) the other thing about a blank screen is your xorg.conf or X server settings.....just an idea but are you running the nvidia graphics or nv graphics?......you may need to redo the graphics is my suggestion as well

It might be use full to do two things :
1) Use yast2 > software management to check if all the dependencies are ok.
2) In the failsafe mode as root startup yast2>hardware> monitor and graphic cards it will probe you,re monitor and graphic card again if OK save it
What is amount of you,re internal memory ? Minimum is 252 MB
Suse maybe slow but steady as a rock

All dependencies are fine according to Yast2, and I am running the full nVidia driver from nVidia, not the generic nv driver that comes in the repos.

I'm really not concerned enough about this to recompile the whole kernel. I know how to do this, I've done it a few times before, but this computer needs to be as stable as possible so wandering off the beaten path in that way is not really an option.

You mention the ramdisk image, and when I was researching this issue before I saw mention of using mkinitrd to fix the problem, and I believe I made a new image at that time, but I don't remember for certain. That's certainly something I can look into further. Can someone please elaborate on this process further?

There was a typo in my system specs, I have 1GB of RAM, not 1MB, and the video card is running on 128MB of shared memory.

What are you using KDe3 or KDE 4 ore Gnome ?
Which KDE4 there are some problems .

I'm using KDE 3.5.

We use the same kernell it is the default I use KDE 3.5.7 release 72.9
A blank screen for let say a few seconds is normal it also happen during start up
Is the 3d Accelator enabled this the test that driver is working correct , please check this too

3d acceleration is enabled, I can run Compiz-Fusion just fine in KDE. The nVidia splash screen does show up when KDE is starting, however there used to be a SuSE splash screen during shutdown. The SuSE shutdown splash is what I'm not seeing anymore, and what I'd like to fix.

Directly after shutdown the system just before the splash screen push the escape button it will bring you in the verbose
mode hope fully it come up with error messages

Tried that too, pushing esc does nothing. When I looked through the shutdown logs I didn't see any errors either.

It is along shot Start suse in failsafe mode and login as a user
You are than in run level 3
Afterwards give the command startx it will starts up the x server
Log out again then see what he did with kde shutdown scripts
Do not forget to give the command shutdown now before cutting down the power
