Opensuse 10.1 x86-64 and VLC
 

Well, everything was working great with Opensuse 10.0 so I decided to go with 10.1 this week.

After banging around with dependencies and such for a couple of days now, I may have to give up unless some one here has more of a clue than I do.

I really need to get VLC running so I can use the multimedia stuff on my satellite receiver to TV rather than only on my PC.

However, no matter what I do, I can't get the dependencies for libslang-utf8 and libdbas-1 to work.

Has anyone had any love with VLC 0.8.5 and Opensuse 10.1?

Tried: vlc source, packman 10.0 rpm, manually installing the packages that provide dbas and slang

libslang? I don't even know what that is, I run VLC fine without it though and I compile mine without dbus support so clearly that's not necessary as well. Just because something is listed as a dep doesn't mean you need it for the app to run, it means you need it for the precompiled version in the RPM to run.

Download the source and run './configure --help | less' and see what options you have. Disable stuff you don't want/need and enable the stuff you do. Once you have done that and figured what deps you really do need to run it, go from there.

On the other hand, if VLC is in the repos Yast uses then it will handle the deps for you should you go about things correctly. If Yast doesn't then report a bug to the package maintainer.

I did download the source and tried to compile it. I have no idea what libslang-utf8 is either, even though I did install the slang packages, which I thought would cover the lib.

With the source, it compiles without error but fails on the make, which I thought was kinda strange.

I dunno, maybe I just have some borked RPM's in there or something. I'm going to start all over tonight after work with JUST the source to see if I can get it to work.

On a seperate note, the Win32 version runs just fine under Crossover Office. I would prefer Linux native, but just in case I can't get the Lin version to work, could I run the Win32 version in a "daemon mode".

I don't really need the vid player part, I just want the streamer to make stuff available over my WiFi for playback to my TV via my Sat receiver.

Oops! Almost forgot! I added the Packman repo but it reports 00 bytes when downloading and seems to disregard the dependencies. Yet another thing to figure out.
