Openoffice2 Frustrations

I wanted to install openoffice 2.
I downloaded the tar file
I opened it and got all the rpms - all 31 of them!
I downloaded and read the setup guide.
It says for a "standard" installation to simply run the rpm.

Nice. So which one? I easily discarded the desktop integration ones not relevant:
Only 28 left.
Good. Maybe they just want one and the others are for emergencies?
Nope, trying one rpm after another didnt give me a standard installation like the book promised. It gave me DEPENDENCY HELL.
Since 28 to the power of 28 is a hellerva lot of possible sequences to try - especially for me because I've been confined to a single mortal life - I sat back for a long time. First I fumed with smoke coming out my ears. I've written manuals before and I hope I've never done this to anyone. Then my wife left saying I wasn't a fit person to be around any more and we never had these troubles when we just had a little Windows 95 machine. After that I got quiet and sullen and went off my food. "Why (I asked the nice shy intern at the admissions desk) would anyone abandon their nice easy MS solutions for this bulls*** ?" "Why indeed?" he asked me baiting me all over again.

Well for everyone else getting misty eyed and teary over their incompetence trying to get openoffice2 going ... here is the easy answer I stumbled on just by pure chance:

thanks for the info, but I built mine with the source tar.gz as the downloaded instructions told me to.

:D So you rpm lovers, eat your hearts out.

20m dowloading the source.
spent 20m reading the instructions
10m answering the installer prompts
10m adding the individual users.

;)

den_benne 11-06-2005 03:32 AM
