OpenOffice Writer: Default margins too wide

The default margins in Writer are much wider than in Microsoft Word. Unfortunately, as Word is probably the de facto standard, I'd like to comply with this standard.

How can I use Word's as the default template? If this is not possible, how can I adjust default formatting in Writer (things such as margin) to be more like

Easy. You can update your default template with custom margins: open a new document, go to Format > Page > Page, adjust margins. Then File > Templates > Save, and save it. Then File > Templates > Organise, choose Templates drop down box, click on My Templates, right-click new template > Set as Default.
