OpenOffice incomplete: "no space left"

I have an older laptop that, before I install OpenOffice, has about 1.21GB on it leftt. When I emerge openoffice, it begins to compile, but always ends up failing by running out of space. I then have to delete the left over files from OpenOffice that are still in /var/tmp and /usr/portage/distfiles. Should it really take that much space or is there another way to compile OOo in such a way that it won't use as much space?

Hi,

OpenOffice.org is space-eater, as far as I remember, it needs about 3 gigs to compile. you better emerge openoffice-bin. Also, I wouldn't recommend you compiling that big package on an older laptop.
