OpenOffice doc sent from RedHat to M$ Word user - HELP!!
 

I'm relatively new to RedHat 8.0 and i LOVE it - I write all my documents in OpenOffice, but have a BIG problem when sending a document (saved either as Word .doc or .rtf) to a M$ user

When they open the document on their computer, the fonts have all been changed - sometimes even the font ATTRIBUTES have been changed (bold, italic, etc...)

needless to say, this looks VERY unprofessional!!! ;)

I don't have much experience with linux fonts, and I haven't added or changed anything from the installation that RedHat 8.0 gave me from the beginning - maybe i need to install TTF's or what??

I appreciate any help anyone could give me...

You may need to use the fonts that come with Windows when you write documents meant for windows users to view (they are good fonts anyway). Get them from

corefonts.sf.net

There are instructions for how to integrate them there. Alternatively just copy across any windows fonts you want and put them in ~/.fonts (create that directory if it doesn't exist). You may need to restart X (there is a command you can run to update the fonts cache but I don't recall what it is).

To restart X after copying the fonts to the right location log out then at the login screeen press ctrl-alt-backspace - the screen will flicker and come back, then login again and your fonts should be available. I think that'll work with OpenOffice, somebody please correct me if OO doesn't yet use fontconfig.

that seems to have done it wonderfully! corefonts.sf.net had great instructions (even the command for reloading the fontserver - i didn't need to restart X)

I also found out that another of my problems was using a template found on the net that screwed up all the font attributes when using a different font, so i'll just stay away from that template :)
