OpenOffice and corrupted display
 

when scrolling in OpenOffice, the document display gets corrupted. i have a feeling that it may be hardware related problem while i haven't seen anything similar (or at least not so often) on systems with nvidia card. mine is matrox g550 with XFree 4.2.1.

This is a video driver issue.

Finding a more suitable driver should fix the problem. If you have a crappy video chipset you may need to disable HW acceleration in /etc/X11/XF86Config.

well, i don't think that matrox chips belong to those crappy ones. and i am using the most suitable (manufacturer's) driver.. so far it seems there is no hope..

I always kind of figured it was glitches in OpenOffice... it's always done that to me too. (Gets especially bad when I resize the window)

Well, I use nvidia, and it doesn't seem to happen to me. I'm still fairly convinced it's a video driver issue.

You could try the X driver rather than the mfg driver (if there's even a difference at all).
You could also try turning off video acceleration (it'll help OOo but not Q3).

If you want the cheesy work around you can probably shade and unshade the window ;-)

Hm, good point. I had a graphic-corruption problem on another box (with an olllld Cirrus SVGA card), and found that setting "no_bitblt" in the XF86Config fixed the problem. There are a bunch of other acceleration-related tweaks you could make to XF86Config.

I may have to look into this further myself :) OpenOffice is just about the only app that does it, but come to think of it, I get other minor problems in other progs as well. LyX has trouble refreshing when it has been resized (easily fixed by min-max), and Mozilla and Phoenix occasionally have problems redrawing stuff. Also my Gtk widgets sometimes take a little longer than they ought to to display correctly after being hidden...
