OK: Insert > Object > Formula

A new window opens where you type in your formula, another one shows the tools, and your formula is also displayed in the main window.

So what is the problem exactly?

I wasn't online during all that - it was 2:41am when you posted the last one.

You got the grey box - so you must have the editor box as well. There should also be a popup called "selection" which has all the widgets in it.

Note - after activating the insert formula thingy - take a close look at the bottom of the writer window - there may be an extra "line" there which you can drag...

I had a go in my system to see if I could remove the editor window ... now it turns out to be resizable by dragging an edge. So try pointing to any horizontal lines you see in case the mouse pointer turns into a double headed arrow with a line through it. If so, you can click and drag that line. Try it and see.

Other than that - go to the open office website, register your system, and complain. ou may find that updating it will clear it up - in fact, I expect so.

O course, if you want to write documents with formatted text and equations, you can always use LaTeX.
