openldap (slapd) - authentication using simple name

Is it possible to set up slapd to authenticate users using a simple name instead of a dn?

Too my knowledge that is not possible.

Some front-ends can be set up to automatically append the basedn portion. If you write your own script to do certain tasks, you could also mimic this approach.
