Openfire won't pass messages along.

I'm trying to start a messaging server for my small companies use. I selected openfire, and installed it onto a virtual machine running Ubuntu 14.04.

I installed it using all the defaults, two different times on two different VM's. Both times they've let users sign in, but when one sends a message, it stalls and fails to send. It also doesn't show any other user as being online.

I'm not even sure of where to begin to look. Any help would be awesome. Beer would also be nice. Any beer you could recommend would be great.
