openbox3 + gnome-panel = SOL
I've read the other threads and this is either a bug, or the one person who knows the correct incantation hasn't read them yet.
I want to use openbox3 together with gnome-panel
I start from a console with startx
Why
===
I'm hooked on dockapps
I need a visual pager (bbpager, fluxter, and all the others I tried with ob2 don't work)
I can program the ob3 keyboard shortcuts to do what I want
I like to TOGGLE vertical and horizontal maximization (it's 1-way with metacity)
What I've tried:
1. naive xinitrc
/usr/bin/openbox &
exec gnome-panel
FAILED with corba errors (as noted in many other posts at LQ.org and gentoo forums)
2. gnome-session
the standard answer is to use 'openbox --replace' and then save your gnome session with 'gnome-session-save'. How do I ditch nautilus to get the ob3 menus?
FAILED with a hang on the restart of X with startx (Ctrl-Atl-Backspace to the rescue)
3. start openbox, wait, manually start gnome-panel
SUCCESS: this is the only thing that works
4. edit the gconf database using gconf-editor and change the window-manager key
FAILED: the ~/.gconf window-manager key HAS NO EFFECT, it keeps getting reset to metacity
5. googling most combinations of openbox|xinitrc|gnome-panel|... that I could think of
No answer
What I haven't tried:
1. renaming the openbox executable to metacity
I'm beginning to think that this is the only way of fixing this.
