The term, "indoor mapping," might also refer simply to route-finding on a (non-GIS) map of an indoor place, e.g. using the sort of map that might appear in a brochure. In some places you will find QR-codes ... say, on doorjambs and light-switch plates ... which can be scanned by appropriate applications to determine exactly where in the building you are. Other attempts have been made to use wireless radio transmitters to provide internal location, although these are vexed by the fact that radio waves will pass through floors and ceilings.
Google, of course, has also experimented with indoor information, e.g. obtained from CAD files or internal measurements.
