Open Office fonts look ugly (and print ugly too)
Just installed open office 1.1.0 (first open office i've used) and i start typing and opening up things i've typed in ms word and i notice that the fonts are extremely jagged and look really nasty
also even when printing, the fonts are not anti-aliased and the paper does not look professional another thing, the space between characters bothers me (it's too much) how can i solve these or should i just use ms word in vmware (as much as i despise the crash-ridden program) *note: sorry if this post sounds like a bunch of whining, plz don't tell me that if i don't like it, then don't use it |
don't know about the slack or deadrat, but can't you just get the windows fonts (presuming that you have a copy of windows somewhere?) or failing that, you can get a fair number of windows fonts (I think) by checking out the msttcorefonts + cabextract packages - which I presume would work for the slack and deadrat ???

hmm, not a bad idea
where are the fonts in linux placed (specifically gnome desktop if it matters) |
it should be somewhere like /etc/usr/fonts - I presume that gnome has a search facility (sorry I use kde, which does)
Don't forget, that if you can do the "mandrake" thing of getting the windows fonts, also if you can access slack and redhat partitions, I would use the font thing in mandrake to get and set up the fonts and then copy them over to the other partitions. If not, get the cabextract and un pack that, then get the msttcorefonts - if you find that the fonts are normally in /etc/usr/fonts then the cabextract should put an extra directory called something like ttfonts or msttfonts or corefonts or whatever within the /etc/usr/fonts regards John |
If you want windows fonts available to OpenOffice, and you also want your desktop, mozilla, etc to look lovely with anti-aliased fonts to rival those of windows, I seriously suggest you check out this page:
http://www.tldp.org/HOWTO/mini/FDU/ and follow it through. It's a godsend |
Spot on Guy,
I knew there was a "howto" somewhere, but couldn't remember where. I'm gonna pile off and use the link myself to "improve" my knoppix install. cheers regards John p.s. Down with the "Royal's" and Coppell is a turncoat scumbag :D |
thx for the link, i'll look into that (but that is more for the desktop environment and in gnome 2.4, everything looks fairly crisp)
as for open office, i just stole the Times New Roman font from my winxp partition and put it in my openoffice share font folder and now typing and printing looks great thx for everything |
