Open Office files

When using say...knoppix, and running open office, is it possible for someone to open an open office document if they use microsoft office?

No, Microsoft refuses to support Open Document formats (such as odt). You can save the .odt document as a .doc file from OpenOffice though.

Their formatting does differ and so you'll need to check each doc. which is very counter productive

If you just want them to be able to read it (ie. not edit it) the best way is to save it as a PDF. Then you have no formatting problems.

Absolutely...

You can e-mail ANY file--you just need to have a format that the recipient can read. Since Acrobat Reader is free, anyone "should"be able to read a pdf.

One of the big strengths of OpenOffice is the built-in PDF export feature.

Please don't forget that you also save it as normal openoffice document. If you only save it as PDF, you only have the PDF that you can not edit.
