Open Office and TIFF files?
I have an instuctor that uses an Apple Computer with OSX she posts her lectures online but all the images are in TIFF format. In open office they come out as black squrares.
In Office XP they tell me that a quicktime decompressor is needed to view the TIFF image. Is there any way around this? Or is 95 percent of her class that uses a PC screwed? From what I have found there is no windows solution to the problem. Are you guys aware of any Linux solutions that allow you to view imbedded TIFF images in Open office? I am running Mandrake 10.1 open office 1.1.3 and Windows XP SP2. Office XP |
You can convert them to postscript and view them individually (ie: externally):
http://www.die.net/doc/linux/man/man1/tiff2ps.1.html As for Windows, you face a similar situation. Office requires an additional plugin, but teh generic Windows Image Viewer can open TIFF's It's probably better to ask your teacher to use something platform-independent, such as JPG or BMP. Only using TIFFs sounds kind of unfair... |
You can view TIFF files under Linux with the xv viewer (or xv3.1 or whatever version you have).
You can call it from the command line: > xv & As for Windows TIFF images viewer, the only program I could open them with was Adobe Photoshop. Or, as scuzzman mentioned, you can convert the images to postcript, either by using a command line >tiff2ps, or by using xv. xv viewer is very handy and quick to visualise images. Good luck asaba |
thanks guys ill try that

from the description there, these are non-standard tiffs |
In windows I use a program called irfanview. It can open multipage tiff files without an issue and loads a LOT faster than other windows apps such as MS Office, or the windows image viewer thingamabob..

i'd like to redeem myself :)
1. i did notice the age of the thread; 2. i also noticed that no solution or explanation was posted; 3. the same question was asked on oo.org irc channel just today - and the tracker report was not closed - so it was still relevant. i felt that resurrecting the zombie thread was a lesser problem than leaving it hanging without an answer. thanks :) |
