open office and .bins

All,
ok, this is my first post, so bear with me, I just installed mandrake 9.0 this morning, and I had errors installing openoffice during installation. I tried it again using rpmdrake, and it threw an error since the checksum or something didn't match. I told it to install anyway, but it threw an error and now I'm looking for another office suite.Trying to get the newest version of koffice to see if that will work. Can anyone recommend a decent office suite for linux that comes free? I went to Sun's site looking at Staroffice, but it looks like it's not free.
meanwhile, I need to extract a .bin file, and I tried tar -x on the command line, but it just sat there and smiled at me. I tried gnuzip also, and it didn't like it. The file I need to extract is LimewireLinux.bin.
If anyone has any ideas, I would appreciate hearing from you. I'm really new to linux, and trying to learn a whole bunch all at once. Thanks in advance.

for limewire you need java installed, but a couple freinds have tried to install it also and i think the .bin file for limewire is just plain corrupted or something.
