open hidden files gedit 2.6

I was wondering how to open hidden files in gedit (Fedora Core 2/Gnome 2.6) from within gedit. I found a way to do this using gedit on Fedora Core 1 (typing ".[TAB]" see http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome.../msg00210.html). I know you can achieve this by typing "gedit .whateverfile" at the prompt, but that is kind of annoying once you have gedit already open. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Whit gedit 2.2 i can open file going to files->open and in the button box type the name of file you want to open (like .whateverfile)

I don't think there is a button box in gedit 2.6.

The way to accomplish this is to select run application in the Gnome Menu and type gedit .filename and if gedit is already open it will create a new tab for the file. You can also use File -> Open URI and use file:///path/to/.filename The tab completion does not seem to work.
