Open AI file (view / edit)?

A colleague sent me per email some AI files (Adobes pictures). I would like to open them with Debian stable. I would be glad that the format opening does not change the image.

Which program would you recommend particularly? On google, I saw one like inkscpae that could do that.

Searching on Google, it seems like the success importing in Inkscape may depend on how many items in an Illustrator document are not vector based (like eps or ps segments from bitscans). This project sounds interesting.

One is a vector based editor like AI, another is a universal convertor you could use to import Illustrator files into Inkscape.
