one file; od can read, but hexer cannot. What happened?

Dear expert Penguins

I am totally lost.

What happened
A text file, od can read, but hexer cannot.
Code:
od -h thefile
0000000 bbef 3cbf ...
But hexer gives empty file as if no filename is given.

troubleshooting
file permission checked -> yes, read/write
make a link to the file -> hexer CAN read
try hexer as root -> hexer CAN read
fsck to check filesystem -> no error found, did not solve

System
Debian testing, amd64

history hiding
Probably irrelevant, but
The text file was made by libreoffice, as a text file.
I needed to convert to datafile for database, I needed to remove BOM.

I guess I am doing something far off track. Can anybody guess what to do next?

cheers

Is there something in the file name that puts hexer off?
Code:
ls thefile | cat -A
Or is it a termcap/terminfo problem?
Code:
hexer -t thefile

Hya,

Thanks for your reply.

ls theFile | cat -a gives me theFile$

With -t, hexer cannot read theFile.

cheers
