onboard causing restart when entering accented greek character

Hi
Ive very recently upgraded to ubuntu 18.04 and have had some teething problems (i'm not a newbie really but i don't have a great deal of experience).
I've had to install onboard because the new onscreen keyboard is completely inadequate. I'm working with documents in mixed English and classical Greek.
Onboard is working fine for the regular ancient greek characters but as soon as i try to enter an accented character - specifically an iota with acute accent (obtained by long click on iota key and selecting accented character from resulting menu) i am immediately logged out and returned to the login page.
How can i get onboard to work properly in 18.04? Or is there a practical alternative? (NOT something like 'characters' which would take forever and a day to find the right characters).

Thanks for any help you can give
Gary
Sorry,i forgot to mention i'm using libreoffice writer for documents.
Pps The language setting is not relevant, it does the same in english, eg for character a with a macron (which i use for latin grammar documents)

Find the keyboard configuration tool in the menu and install the polytonic Greek keyboard driver. Then configure the Scroll Lock key to toggle drivers and the Scroll Lock light to show when you're using your second driver, and all should be well. You can see what the keys do in the file
/usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/gr
