on board audio

I am making a computer from scratch, and i bought a ASUS A7V266-E Motherboard with on board audio. Now im wondering since i didnt put the computer together yet, will the Onboard audio card (incorporated into the motherboard) work. If not so i can buy a seperate audio card.
I have to brag a little bit too, so here are the specs of the comp im planning to make.
AMD Athlon XP 1600 MHZ
ASUS A7V266-E Motherboard
512 DDR RAM
Ans thats all i have so far, all this so far costed me around $300. I am hoping of getting the whole computer with less than $1000, without the monitor tho.
So can someomone plz tell me if this on board audio thing will work in Linux (WITHOUT ALSA, I CAN"T STAND ALSA!).
Thanks!

Wow? Where did you find an Athlon XP and DDRAM for that cheap? I use the same motherboard, with an Athlon 1Gz, and 756 SDRAM...and it cost me a lot more than that...

But as for your question.... I've never known anybody who actually USED a motherboard's onboard sound. It works, but the quality would be a lot less than a cheap SoundBlaster card, plus you can only plug ONE device into onboard sound. (So, if you use more than one CD drive, you'll be out of luck)

My recommendation, get a good soundcard. It isn't needed, but with all that processing power, you might as well have sound to match it, right?

ok, thanks, thats basically what i wanted to do. I'll get a cheap Sound Blaster - i only need sound to listen to some music while working...
As for the price: Well i live in italy and i got the mother board for 250 lire (around $125), the processor for about 200lire ($100), and i bought memory in Yugoslavia for VERY cheap, around $25.
As is said i still have to buy a lot of things (Geforce 2, sound blaster, case, two 10GB HD's) and i already have a floppy and a CD-rom from one of the pld computers although its a pity putting old shitty stuff on such computer so as soon as i get more $$$ i'll buy a new CD-rom, or DVD, a burner and some other stuff. Thanks for help! And i also wanted to ask if someone knows where could i sell old hardware. I have a 24XCD-ROM, A pentium T @ 200mhz, A mobo, and a bunch of video cards and monitors i ned to sell to get some $$$, cuz its a pity to leave them in the garage to rot if they can be still used.
